While employed at Tropic Studio, I worked on a website revitalisation project for Nu Nu Restaurant. As a marquee business in Tropical North Queensland, it was crucial for their website to reflect not only the bright, sunny atmosphere of idyllic Palm Cove and the warmth of the restaurant team but also their status as an iconic, reputable business whose presence is deeply ingrained in the culture of Cairns and the Far North.

Nu Nu’s website was originally built on LocalSearch – an unconventional content management system (CMS) that did not prioritise website speed, user experience, or search engine optimisation (SEO).
Starting fresh, I redesigned the website in Figma, following UX/UI best practices. I drew inspiration from the brand colours of Nu Nu’s sub-brand, Nu Nu Events & Catering, whose warm pastel blue and pink effortlessly unify Nu Nu Restaurant, Events & Catering, and Numi Ice Creamery, while reflecting the relaxed, positive vibe of Palm Cove.
Nu Nu Restaurant’s geometric, brutalist-style logo served as a launch pad for integrating its distinctive letterforms into the website design. These shapes became a recurring visual motif across buttons and content elements, adding character and reinforcing brand cohesion.
The website was developed by Tropic Studio’s web development partner, ICIT, using the TYPO3 CMS – a robust alternative to WordPress. TYPO3 was chosen for its flexible site architecture, enhanced security (due to minimal reliance on third-party plugins), and user-friendly backend, allowing Nu Nu’s team to easily manage their own content.
Beyond the design, I authored all website copy, carefully balancing brand voice with SEO best practices. Page speed, meta descriptions, and other SEO considerations were prioritised throughout development to ensure optimal performance and visibility.
